Description

The Golden Era of Ukrainian funk: Folk, and Refined Groove.

The Lviv band “Arnika” is probably the first thing that comes to mind for many who are familiar with our musical heritage.
Over the past few years, the band’s work has once again become a national treasure: this is evidenced by the number of views on YouTube channels and the great popularity of the song “Kateryna”, which managed to go viral on TikTok.

The band was created in Lviv at the end of 1971 on the initiative of Volodymyr Vasyliev, a talented singer and an excellent organizer who managed to gather around him a whole bunch of gifted musicians. They united in a collective to play modern popular music at a professional level, and they succeeded! It should be noted that throughout its existence, “Arnika” has always been an amateur group.

Arrangements of folk songs in the 1970s were played by all ensembles without exception; However, no one could combine Ukrainian melody with jazz syncopation so successfully, and Hutsul rhythm with beat rhythms. That is why “Arnika” won the most popular youth TV contest in the country “Allo, we are looking for talents!” in 1972. That is why “Arnika”, without belonging to any philharmonic society, managed to record and release an album that Ukrainian music lovers have been listening to for more than half a century.

“Silver Ships” is the only full-length release released at the peak of the band’s fame. The album was recorded in Lviv in the summer of 1973. Undoubtedly, after the triumphant performance at the “Allo, we are looking for talents!” contest, the release of the album consolidated the success that the band achieved in 1972; according to Viktor Morozov, the release of the album “was a remarkable achievement, and this greatly influenced the band’s popularity.”

This record is a document of the era, which eloquently testifies to the obvious fact: Ukrainian music in the 1970s sounded professional, high-quality and stylish.
We are very proud that acquaintance with the musicians of the band, in particular with Volodymyr Vasyliev and Viktor Morozov, made it possible to make this edition exactly as it is.

We thank our colleague Oleksandr Zakrevsky for the idea of creating, restoring the phonograms and visual materials.

Classics - a classic form! With our activities, we strive to implement the culture of correct, high-quality vinyl reissues into the Ukrainian music space, focusing on world standards. So... Second-by-second restoration of sound digitized from magnetic tapes, original design and authorized track list - this is just the beginning.

The release will be released on classic "heavy" (180 grams) black vinyl.
We tried to ensure that the carefully restored cover preserved all the main nuances of the original edition.

A real gift not only for collectors, but also for a wide range of connoisseurs of Ukrainian musical heritage will be a 12-page booklet containing song lyrics, archival photos and memories of the members of “Arnika” about how the album was recorded and what preceded it. In addition to all of the above, the edition is complete with a poster and an insert, and the first 99 copies will contain an autograph of the band leader Volodymyr Vasyliev.

Limited edition of only 499 copies, each of which has a hand-numbered obi!
