Karna — the band that created Hutsul metal

Karna is a Ukrainian rock band from Ivano-Frankivsk, founded in 1997. The band began as a Ukrainian alternative metal act and gradually developed its own distinctive sound, which the musicians called “Hutsul metal.”

Karna’s music combines alternative rock with Carpathian mysticism, folk motifs, and distinctive Hutsul lyrics. Heavy guitar riffs, energy, and technical complexity became the foundation of a style that set Karna apart on the Ukrainian metal scene.

The band’s name comes from pre-Christian beliefs. Karna was a deity associated with mourning for the dead, as well as punishment, grief, and death on the battlefield.

Throughout its history, the band’s lineup has changed several times. Vladyslav Yarun, who played guitar and provided backing vocals, has remained the band’s only permanent member.

“Hutsul Metal” — Karna’s signature style

“Hutsul Metal” is Karna’s third studio album, which ultimately shaped and defined the band’s distinctive musical identity.

The album combines Carpathian mysticism, alternative rock, and free-flowing Hutsul lyrics. Its cohesive concept brings together technically complex music, intense energy, and occasional irony in the lyrics.

The album’s highlights include “Party na Prykarpatti”, with its humorous lyrics, and the mystical “Poltergeist”, which became two of the album’s most recognizable tracks.

The recording of “Hutsul Metal” featured Oleksii Shmanov (vocals), Viktor Vdovych (bass guitar), Vladyslav Yarun (guitar), and Oleh Bilous (drums).

TILKITAK Records presents “Hutsul Metal” in two formats — vinyl and audio cassette.

This release allows collectors to choose the format that best fits their collection: the large-format 180g vinyl record or the compact audio cassette with its limited edition.
