Description
“There are two kinds of music: there is good music and there is bad music. I want to think that I make good music. But that’s my opinion. It has always been important for me to make and sing what I love. That is, to do what you love, and to love what you do. Grandiose? Grandiose.” © Misko Barbara
Mertvy Piven (Dead Rooster) is an iconic band on the Ukrainian scene, which emerged on the wave of post-punk and art rock in Lviv. The band's work is a combination of powerful, energetic rock with highly intellectual and philosophical poetry. “Shabadabada” is the band's studio album that cemented their iconic status and fully unlocked the band's potential. This album is a unique experiment in which the words of T.H. Shevchenko are combined with the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The collective was founded by young students in 1989 in the Lviv cafe "Stary Lviv" (Old Lviv), where they often gathered. A weather vane (an iron figure of a rooster) hung at the entrance to the establishment, which they called dead. Hence, the name "Mertvy Piven" arose. The first musical experiments of MP took place exclusively with acoustic instruments. It was in this sound that the band received its first recognition from critics and listeners.
The album “Shabadabada” was released in 1998 and lyrically retained its poetic sharpness, delving into philosophical reflections on being, chaos, and the absurd. The cult romantic tracks "Potsilunok" (Kiss) and "Nad Morem" (Above the Sea), which is a cover of an early Volodymyr Ivasyuk song, are present here. The following participated in the work on the album: the permanent leader Lyubko Futorsky, Misko Barbara, and Yaryna Yakubyak (all three on vocals), Roman Chaika and Yuriy Chopyk (guitarists), Oleh "John" Suk (bass guitar), and Roman Ros (violin).
For the first time on vinyl from ТІЛЬКИТАК Records, this release was created with special attention to detail and based on the cassette edition. Produced on double vinyl, 140g, in red and black colors, it comes with a photo insert and a booklet with song lyrics. All 299 copies were hand-numbered, and the first 99 contain the autographs of the band members.
An Obi-Strip with the copy number is added externally, which emphasizes the collectible component of the edition.
